The tell

Dead opaque red. Hold the edge to the sun and no light gets through at all. Carnelian at the same thickness glows orange.

Jasper is chert stained red by iron. On the Marquette shore it turns up welded to grey hematite as jaspilite.

Every stone on this chart is drawn and kiss-cut at three inches. The rarer the stone, the fewer exist: only 750 red jasper will ever be printed, then the run is retired.
